I don’t assume and I don’t ask. I have beent told, “my husband will not help out with childcare. I can never stay late because I have to fetch my son from daycare. I have to stay home when my child is sick.”

That’s actually a useful solution.  If we had a floater, the problem would be solved.  I’ll ask HR about it.  It would be much cheaper than the losses we incur when people have to miss work.

As someone who employs 30+ people, I struggle with this a lot. If I knew someone was going to have a kid and that someone didn’t have a plan for when kid gets sick, sings in school play, has a field trip, why would I hire her? 

I sometimes thnk that things can’t get closer to Nazi Germany. We have children separated from their parents in jail for trying to immigrate; White supremacists in the highest offices; the President racially and sexually degrading women.Of course that’s all in the past week. But then, no, they somehow top themselves…

Then hopefully “some Black women” don’t have to rely on making whites happy to keep their job. I’m not one of them and obviously neither is Monique.

People are intimidated by strong Black women, period. It’s just how it is. It’s not changing. As woman of color, I know I have to temper everything I say with calming words and use a soothing tone.
