I think in fairness it was pretty light family shade and not really the point of the sentence, either, when you read it in context. 

I agree. I wonder if productions times have something to do with that - they take so long to develop that maybe they feel behind the trend instead of ahead of it.

To me, the tone is just very off/odd. It sounds sort of like a kid’s show or something. Very quippy, cheesy, etc. It feels very cliché, kinda “wacky”.
