The ‘angel’ is white in this show because Brit Marling is white. Brit Marling is the co-creator/writer of the OA and so far has always cast herself in the lead role of her projects. If Brit Marling had been black, latino, or whatever instead that’s what the main character would be.

The show was overwhelmingly white in its casting, though I agree that the inclusion of the trans character was interesting and I thought was done tastefully.
