Yes, was coming here to say the same thing. Wife and I loved it, the mix of action and comedy and drama (well, not that much...but there was some!) was so well done. Reminded me of “Preacher”. Not too many shows can hit all those different notes.

Fury Road had one of the best trailers ever...this is not that.  I’m still excited for the movie, but this was a boring trailer.

I should have said “I loved the movie...up to that point, and then it went to shit”

I feel like i’ve seen this story too much recently, so I think I’ll pass (hell, even House of Usher was about a family pushing their version of Oxy!).

Agreed!! I loved the movie, it felt personal to Tarantino, like him grappling with his own place in a changing hollywood. And then...beating the shit out of a woman and flamethrowers. It just felt like a copout on his part. Like he felt too raw and exposed so he had to go for the thrill and the laugh.

It’s clear Tarantino is retiring early because he knows not everyone has realized he’s become more and more one note and afraid of committing to something with real feeling. He can do it...but he’s too child like and has to hide behind flamethrowers and ultra violence.

One thing I get a kick out of mentioning every episode to my wife is “why are the CEO and the guy buying this giant company that owns TV networks, news operations, and movie studios, so concerned with what the morning fluff news show thinks about everything?”

My bladder can’t take it. I watched the Irishman in theaters, and I timed my break for that weird little side quest De Niro took to panama I think? It seemed ancillary to the plot, so i figured i wouldn’t miss much.  I should rewatch the movie though to finally see that 3 minutes I missed.

Did they though? It kind of felt like a totally organic and perfect time and place to end it. If they did cancel it against the wishes of the show runner...i think they did the right thing. They gave him a last season to “end it” properly, and it never overstayed its welcome.

Too bad he doesn’t look for that quality much anymore (I’m not versed in the whose who of Netflix, maybe Hastings as the founder of the company is more hands off in this stuff than he used to be?)

I don’t think the number ever mattered. “The Defenders” was 8 episodes and still sucked. It’s just how Netflix makes shows. the “hey, make it a long movie” just doesn’t work for 3 or 4 or 8 or 10 or 13 episodes.

It’s funny going back to those early netflix years and I recall AVclub running little blogs about Netflix never cancelling anything...be careful what you wish for! Now nothing goes past 3 seasons, 2 if they are lucky even.

Yup! Jessica Jones was done perfect this year...it was called Poker Face. 10 stand alone case of the week episodes that each also added to the season long plot. No wheel dragging. Just fun episodes that used the cast and guest stars well, while never dragging.

The pacing on every Netflix marvel show after Daredevil season 1 (..i think...it’s been awhile) was just so bad. Here’s a note for whoever makes TV: If you have 10 episodes, or 8, or 12, and you don’t have “content” for all 10 that follow your main plot...it’s OK to do one off episodes! Look at Doctor Who (when it was

In terms of the writers room, I don’t think the studios are properly understanding that they are shooting themselves in the foot here. For a pretty small sum of money, you are nurturing your future show runners and creatives. Having “Stranger things” written by the Duffer Brothers and a single extra writer each season

I wonder about him. He’s great friends with McBride and Hill since college, so it shouldn’t be a shock that he wanted to move into those things. He’s also doing Hellraiser and The Exorcist, so maybe he really does love horror. I think “Joe” and “Prince Avalanche” in 2013 are the last of what I’d call “David Gordon

I was watching a director panel on youtube featuring Scorsese and others, including young director Lulu Wang, and he encouraged her to keep trying to find her own voice instead of immediately going to do a Marvel movie. I think that’s the point of this, guys like Marty and Spielberg and Coppola had time to make movies

I feel like all of the big swings Amazon took with fantasy were “great trailer...uh...we have to make 10 episodes still? Isn’t the trailer enough?” shows.

Haven’t tried it yet, but i found season 3 weak, so hopefully 4 is better than that. 3 had a great cast (as always), looked great....but just didn’t ever feel like it went anywhere.

They aren’t doing nearly as well as they were 5 years ago. Disney itself is vocal about decreasing the quantity to work on the quality. the “review bombing” is just reviewers giving honest takes on mediocre movies.
