It’s funny going back to those early netflix years and I recall AVclub running little blogs about Netflix never cancelling anything...be careful what you wish for! Now nothing goes past 3 seasons, 2 if they are lucky even.

Yup! Jessica Jones was done perfect this year...it was called Poker Face. 10 stand alone case of the week episodes that each also added to the season long plot. No wheel dragging. Just fun episodes that used the cast and guest stars well, while never dragging.
The pacing on every Netflix marvel show after Daredevil season 1 (..i think...it’s been awhile) was just so bad. Here’s a note for whoever makes TV: If you have 10 episodes, or 8, or 12, and you don’t have “content” for all 10 that follow your main plot...it’s OK to do one off episodes! Look at Doctor Who (when it was…
In terms of the writers room, I don’t think the studios are properly understanding that they are shooting themselves in the foot here. For a pretty small sum of money, you are nurturing your future show runners and creatives. Having “Stranger things” written by the Duffer Brothers and a single extra writer each season…
I wonder about him. He’s great friends with McBride and Hill since college, so it shouldn’t be a shock that he wanted to move into those things. He’s also doing Hellraiser and The Exorcist, so maybe he really does love horror. I think “Joe” and “Prince Avalanche” in 2013 are the last of what I’d call “David Gordon…
I was watching a director panel on youtube featuring Scorsese and others, including young director Lulu Wang, and he encouraged her to keep trying to find her own voice instead of immediately going to do a Marvel movie. I think that’s the point of this, guys like Marty and Spielberg and Coppola had time to make movies…
I feel like all of the big swings Amazon took with fantasy were “great trailer...uh...we have to make 10 episodes still? Isn’t the trailer enough?” shows.
Haven’t tried it yet, but i found season 3 weak, so hopefully 4 is better than that. 3 had a great cast (as always), looked great....but just didn’t ever feel like it went anywhere.
They aren’t doing nearly as well as they were 5 years ago. Disney itself is vocal about decreasing the quantity to work on the quality. the “review bombing” is just reviewers giving honest takes on mediocre movies.
What a bizarre comment. Across the Spider-Verse earned $687M vs $458M for Elemental. I don’t think Elemental earning $1M more overseas is a victory for Disney. Quantumania made $200M less than the last Ant-Man, and $100M less domestically than Across the Spider-Verse (the last Ant-Man made more than Into the…
The funny thing is, Disney’s recent slate may as well have been made by AI, and they are paying the price at the box office as people are staying home instead of going to see the latest cookie cutter crap that Disney is producing. AI would only make that worse.
Right, the loopholes they drove through after the last strike are exactly why there is a strike this time, so of course they are going to be hyper vigilant on these potential problem areas.
While this seems shitty, it also seems like it’s “ugly guy complaining he is only matching with ugly girls, when he knows he deserves models”
Laurence Fishbourne (1961) played Cuba Gooding Jr (1968) father in “Boys N the Hood”. That one is pretty wild.
I loved the performances. It was just too disjointed. Keaton was excellent, but it often felt like they were just throwing stuff at the wall not sure what worked
This sounds too much like Dopesick. That show focused on the Sackler family, pharma sales people (also a male and female duo), and a young person who got addicted to opioids after a workplace accident. I guess the description is missing if this one also follows the prosecutors going after Purdue and a doctor who gets…
“none of them, however, ever came close to achieving the kind of success”...my friend, Ghost made over $500M worldwide and was the top grossing movie of 1990.
Loved the film noire episode, I have a feeling it will be my favorite of the season. But excited to see this one, and I trust it won’t be a lame parody like the director says here.
I swear every time they do this i google to see if McBride is overdubbing the voice in some way. That kid does such an amazing young Danny.
Since Scorcese turned 60, he has made:
