Hmm, I really do love both parts and prefer DoW2 by a small margin. I missed base-building RTS even at the point when DoW2 was released, but the game is, imo, so incredibly well executed that it stopped bothering me after the first few hours in.

And Warhammer 40k is ten years older than Starcraft. If I recall correctly Starcraft was prototyped as a W40k game but rejected by Games Workshop, but that might be my memory betraying me. The roots of Starcraft in W40k are undeniable, tho. Terrans = Space Marines, Protoss = Eldar, Zerg = Tyranids.
