I too was incredibly underwhelmed by FW. It just didn’t do anything new... and to make matters worse, it took a few steps back narratively.

One of the best-selling and highest rated games of that year… “underrated”.
This was my thought reading this. It is pretty universally considered a great game. Not sure why that is in the headline. It was one of the game that led me to get a PS4. Its all around one of my favorites. Forbidden West didn’t really pull me in the same - I don’t know the map got too big, it wasn’t new anymore, or…
Don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone ever refer to Horizon as “underrated”
I think most people have greatly underestimated how far local game streaming has come in the last few years.
“In fact last night I installed Chiaki on my ROG Ally and streaming from my PS5 is flawless.”
And that’s exactly the problem with the Portal...handheld pcs and any android/ios device running an open-source app handles streaming better than the dedicated 1st party hardware Sony build specifically to do that one thing…
The thing that struck me as the most insane about this year’s show was the total lack of any rhyme or reason for the awards that got the Keighley shotgun treatment, and the awards that got an actual presentation.
I’ve never liked that dude. An industry shill only wanting attention and making The Game Awards out to be the biggest ego stroke with the only other person he is willing to share any ounce of limelight with being Kojima. It is cringeworthy at this point.
“ALL THEY WANT TO DO IS SHOW YOU ADS” this site says as I have to fight through ads to read the site
That’s not necessarily true. Has CoD ever won anything at TGA? LoL? Fortnite? The indie categories are neither the biggest nor the most successful games either.
If TGA was purely an awards show, how many people would actually watch it?
As much as we all like to joke about Geoff Keighley being “Doritos Pope” and a shill and whatnot, I think the dude legitimately just wanted to create “the Oscars of video games” and this is what it takes to make it feasible. Can’t really fault him for that, and I don’t see anyone else producing an alternative at this…
I think it’s telling how seriously the “awards show” aspect is taken when you’ve got plenty of celebrity appearances hocking their upcoming projects/products for minutes at a time, while the folks winning the awards are quickly ushered off stage.
That’s not to say celebrities don’t belong on the Game Awards stage; just…
I’m not so sure about its success in terms of retention. It dropped off the Steam topseller charts real quick. BG3 has been out for almost three months and it’s managed to stay in the top 10 sellers (usually top 5) that entire time. Conversely, Starfield has been out for less than two months and dropped out of the top…
They may have grabbed more headlines this year but when it comes to profitability, even the most successful SP games don’t come anywhere near the most successful MP games. Developers and publishers will always chase the live service dream (where you make millions of dollars a day from MTX alone) but at the very least,…
Surprised Starfield wasn’t mentioned, even if it was more ambitious than it could pull off, it’s obviously a huge success in terms of player sales and engagement.
Nah, you’re not weird! I loved Cyberpunk from day 1. My personal story was a lot different from most people with that game. I had it on Series X, and I really had no problems. Some little bugs and glitches sure, but overall it played pretty solid and I thought it looked great. I fell in love with it and it’s one of…
An interesting thing about so many of the great titles this year: They’ve all been single player. Baldur’s Gate 3, Phantom Liberty, Tears of the Kingdom, Spiderman 2, Starfield, RE4 Remake, Dead Space Remake, Mario Wonder, Armored Core VI, Lies of P. Single player games have dominated gaming hype for most of this…
Holy cow this (and the original review) is so well put. 1000% agree.
The biggest issues I have had with Starfield are mainly QoL and the procedurally generated content being way too consistent between planets.
