The demographics mean that more Republicans can make it directly to the polls in the limited time they are open. I don’t have any stats or citation to offer, but as a share Republicans have a higher turnout in personal voting while Democrats have a higher turnout in absentee or mail voting.

Recounts will include ballots sent in by non-traditional means (such as absentee ballots, which can arrive at the very last second) that they might not otherwise bother counting if the race isn’t this close.
