... What a job is worth is how much it takes to get someone to do the job. If a company can’t make money paying what it takes to get someone to do that job, it is not competitive and must evolve or go out of business.
NPR’s Marketplace (technically American Public Media) regularly asks the question.

You’ll be sending the GF/Wife back for bail money; you equally entitled little....
4th: Is ride-sharing a net gain or loss in car production? So long as the mileage lifespan remains the same, it seems like more cars would be required??? (assuming my 20 mile round trip in my car would take more total miles in a ride share?)

I’m going to take a contrary view here; against all those warnings about how trucks can’t see you. ... Yeh, you’re right and I’d better pay attention ... But all drivers are responsible for the area around their vehicle. If the trucks can’t see, they need more mirrors; or cameras.
Average Commute Time Will Never Decrease: The average commute time is what humans can bear for the benefits of that local. Any longer, and we move somewhere else. Shorter, and we move in; increasing congestion and commute time. ... Or we build more cheaper suburban sprawl further out; which also increases commute time.
Probably about the same amount as people who buy a sports car and actually take it to the track.
