Jeff VanderMeer has gone on the record as saying that Lovecraft is not a major influence — he’s just never cared for his writing.

It’s because while Lovecraft’s stories are filled with weird concepts and apocalyptic spectacle, there isn’t much else in them that lends itself to straight adaptations. His characters are all the same, middle-aged academics or dilettantes who keep mostly to themselves. No relationships or romances; most of his…
Fun fact: the story is based on the building(and flooding) of the Quabbin reservoir in Mass, and the re-location of the people who lived there before they filled it, its just down the road from where I live. The story was written in ‘27, at the same time construction started. Don’t drink the water.
One of Lovecraft’s most beloved short stories...
Tommy Chong.
I hope he plays the Color.
They should depict the color the same way we ALL saw it . . . with the colors from that Gold and White dress!
Lovecraft feels like one of those authors that should have more adaptations than he does. And when anything is adapted, the script seems more ‘inspired’ by the material than straight translation. Wonder is it the ‘John Carter’ effect, wherein be being the progenitor it ends up feeling twice as derivative.
The “Game of Thrones” comparison is rather apt I think, and for a deeper reason than just similarity.
I don’t know that I’d even consider the Epstein Drive fantastical, given that it’s essentially just an incredibly efficient fusion engine. It doesn’t operate on any principles that aren’t compatible with our modern understanding of science, it’s just better than what we can manage. Which is the ballpark of hard sci-fi…
Well, hard sci fi can have fantastic elements. 2001: A Space Odyssey is usually classified as hard sci fi, but even without the monolith and such there is still, say, a true artificial general intelligence with emotions.
By now you have your answer on whether to watch.
Not really. The Outside Context Problem trope in full does show up in the most recent book with a bit of a twist, and you’re right that the foundation is being laid out for it in the show, but that’s really mostly just a catalyst for the main conflict and drama of the series: human beings.
The Expanse is not about…
The story is intertwined but very, very good. It takes into account that 2nd and 3rd generations of humans born in Mars have nothing in common to relate to with Earth humans. Political plots in the brink of war... money and power rules as always.
1) There are some scenes where they edit for time, but for the most part they’re really good at how LONG everything takes. When Alex threads the Jupiter system to Ganymede might have been the loosest that they ever got.
Oh man, the physics! That bird in the first (maybe second) episode was trippy but realistic!
First four or five episodes were kind of hit or miss for me, but if you stay with it you won’t be able to wait for season 4. Though, I’ve been waiting for season 3 to hit prime. So, feb 8 & 9 I will binge season 3.
I only ever watched the show on Amazon, and I always do a bit of a double take when people talk about her not swearing. She could blister paint.
Watch it on Amazon. She swears like a sailor.
Fuck. Yes.
