Yup. I don’t even think I was fully aware of what social work was until after I had started social work coursework. I lucked out in that I ended up loving it (I’m a newly minted social worker however, we’ll see what I am saying after a few more years). The profession doesn’t do enough to promote itself. It also

Was just coming here to say this. I’m an RSW and work in Assertive Community Treatment/acute care. I bypassed the child welfare stream in my undergrad to take every mental health/health care class I could get my hands on. I’m going back soon to get my masters and register as a clinical social worker, which in BC will

Never in my lifetime did I think the words “Fuckable” and “Prime Minister” would be used in conjunction. I already follow politics but I will be doing so much more ...vigorously....now.

In all seriousness though, watching Harper’s concession speech followed by Trudeau’s victory speech was absolutely delightful. If the

WOW that’s not a lot at all.... I can’t even imagine working in that situation. I’m casual at the hospital so I cover a lot of different units. Right now I’m on the inpatient acute psychiatry unit (about 30 beds). I’m the only social worker on the unit and I swear I could work 10 hour days and still have stuff to do.

I love the nurses I work with too! I work as a social worker in both acute care and community mental health and I don’t know what I would do without the nurses answering all of the medical questions I throw at them. The doctors/psychiatrists are so rarely around that I rely on the nurses heavily for help when trying

Is it because you need to be fitted for it for it to work correctly? I seem to recall that about diaphragms.... That’s the only thing I can think of...

Yeah the “Use birth control” argument is one of my most hated. It’s like the commenter wants you to know how uneducated they are because they seem completely unable to comprehend the fact that, you know, birth control can fail....

On a slightly unrelated note, I am happy to tell you that Victoria (where she is now,

My buddy the summer we worked together at a greenhouse: "I'm too tired to come into work to" ....

Fuck Harper indeed!

Yeah I'm in Victoria too and while I do see a lot of people treating the Indigenous folks very well, I also have heard some absolute horror stories from people at school (UVic social work is very big on Indigenous social work practices, which has really served to teach me exactly how uninformed I am about this stuff)

I think the problem stems from the fact that most kids just aren't taught about it. In BC there is curriculum surrounding residential schools being introduced into public schools, but I think it's still in a "trial" stage. In my social work program we had to take two classes in Indigenous approaches to social work - a

What province are you in? That's the experience I've had in BC too. The MCFD stacks way too many cases on the social workers ...

This was my first thought as well. In BC the child protection social workers are so overworked and carrying such unmanageable case loads that they hardly have time to investigate the serious stuff. There wouldn't even be resources to look into this.

Ah to be a CPS social worker in Washington DC and actually have time to investigate stuff like this. I think the overworked (to the point of many taking stress leave) protection social workers in BC would laugh this one out of the office.....

I remember in my first year of university I was dating a fellow who, for an 18-year-old, was a fairly decent dude. This was ASIDE from the fact that he once told me his rule was that you should be careful with a girl who couldn't count the number of men who she had slept with on one hand. If she could and you were

Love them. I remember reading a quote from one of them once (can't remember which) stating "we are the only successful Jewish-Palestinian partnership in all of history" or something to that effect. I like how they can manage to make light of anything.

sadly there is just as much crazy here as anywhere else. I go to UVIC. Victoria is fairly progressive. UVIC is, in particular, full of hippies. For example - We have a 420 club that meets and peacefully smokes up every Wednesday afternoon. We also have a vocal student lifer group who show up every year with horrid

Still exists in lots of BC locations too

It's easy to be pissed off about this, however I think it's a lot more complicated than people think. I'm not saying I agree with the policy, but if you read any of the literature on the the 60's scoop (not sure if non-Canadians are familiar with this term, but it basically was the removal of many, many, MANY
