In the movie, Bobby mentions DeBarge while trying to make his point about Janet not wanting to be with a black man because DeBarge is light skin. He then says “he’s a backup dancer” referring to Janet’s boyfriend and soon-to-be secret husband, Rene. The timeline actually wasn’t off at all.
