Hey now, we don’t know how granny identified, so it has to be abuelx.

You know what sucks? Meeting a cute guy and having your mother tell you that’s your cousin somewhere down the line as soon as she quizzed him about who his people are. Thank God we were too young to do grown folk “stuff” or I’d still be in therapy now.

In my white family it’s all about proximity. My dad moved from the sticks to the city as soon as he could and I don’t have that relationship with my cousins. The cousins whose parents stayed in their small rural town all grew up together, went to school together, and have that relationship.

there’s no real distinction between first, second, and third cousins

My favorite is when they bring up hip-hop or something sports related when you’re talking about a completely unrelated subject. Uh, what the fuck does Kendrick Lamar have to do with Belgian Waffles, Jan?

Or instead of calling you nigger they will tell about all their black friends and how they don’t see color and how they loved Get Out. Again I’ve about had my fill of white people for the next 12 years since these last 12 months have been exhausting

Trayvon Martin is definitely a moment for me too. Because I’ve worn hoodies in stores and been followed my whole life, and being one of the “good ones” never mattered before I spoke.

I like your honesty, it refreshing because so many of us don’t like to admit that we fell for that “good one” bullshit. Well said sir. or Madame (I didn’t see any self identifying pronouns in your post and I’m not gonna disrespect).

I think its because Don turned 50 in 2016, something happens to lots of people after they cross that big 5-0, they sort of stop giving fucks. Nobody has time or patience for shit anymore. You got more years behind you than ahead of you and always trying to appease assholery falls really low on the totem pole.

As someone who has spent most of his life being considered “one of the good ones”, white people constantly insisting you are in some way better than other black folks starts to fuck with your head. It’s why Stacy Dash and Jason Whitlock are who they are. That shit can brainwash you.

For a long time Don played that “hurt and educated” black gay male stereotype very well. He got too comfortable inside his on personal delusion. But this Trump thing really shook the shit out of him. It’s made most of us better for it.

Facts! After Don got drunk, got his nipples pierced on live TV and didn’t get fired, he became the brother we all thought we were getting when he came to CNN looking like Tom Dubois. I like Black Don. Don Onyx. Donyx.

Eh, he’s better than any of us. ::shrug::

11. Created a burner account so he could comment on The Root.

I guess we’ll never know, because who watches Fox Sports 1.

#10. Maybe a shower like dude in The Crying Game.

Your poem was amazing, Ashlee!

I was a full-on adult when the album came out, almost 23, and I just remember being so amazed. I can’t even begin to imagine how it would have affected me as a child. To see someone who was dark like me just out there doing her thing and winning so hard at it? Oooh, chile it was “a. thing.”
This was a lovely article

Missy is a genius.

Even as a young boy, I knew that this album was on another level. It wasn’t just a great rap album it was something new. It was a big (not fat but big) Black woman slaying before slaying was a thing. This album still goes hard any day of the week.
