On the macro economic level, it is not great that people aren’t leasing. On a personal finance level, these articles are right--leasing is typically a poor financial decision. With the rise in leasing costs it has only gotten worse.
Covid followed by $6 gas would be my answer
We did just that. The residual value made it a steal. In addition, I my car only has 14K miles, why return the car, leave money on the table, and then have to fight the battle to buy a new car.
My experience has been that new car dealers have been just avoiding the lease. My partner has been looking for a car, but his annual mileage would be so low that he thinks a lease makes sense.
People arent leasing right now because the manufacturers have completely stopped subventing lease rates and residuals.
I wonder how many folks who leased shortly before Covid found themselves with a relatively cheap buyout in the last 12 months and just decided to buy the car outright. My parents were in that boat with a 3 year old Q5 that had like 12k miles on it. The pre-determined buyout price made it a steal.
What’s best to lease- Those models with significantly high residuals i.e. Subaru Outback, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Tacoma. In fact you can buy out the lease at the end, sell it and make a profit because the market price would end up higher than the calculated residual value.
Where would people get this idea???
