Also, are we really sure Subaru’s AWD is less capable than a 4wd with a rear locking diff? From what I recall doesn’t Subaru use clutch packs (like a limited slip) and lock them if it detects…

Yup.  The 5 in North County and north of Pendleton is a wild place, particularly on Fridays.
