It’s a real thing (down here in Georgia it is). My wife’s truck sustained 12,000 in damage (didn’t total) and they wanted to settle for $300 in diminished value. After privately setting up and submitting a private evaluation ,they agreed to pay me $1500.

Most insurers don’t allow for first party diminished value. So if you wreck your car, you aren’t getting DV since its your fault. If someone else hits you, you are entitled to DV in most states, you just have to ask the rep from the company who insured the person at fault.

This is a real thing. If somebody hits you, you are owed the repairs and can get the difference in the value drop as a result of the accident. All things being equal, your vehicle is now worth less even after repairs and should be compensated for that.
