It’s the secret fear of all misogynists (and all racists, too), that once the oppressed gain power, they’ll want to do to the oppressor what’s been done to them.

I can confirm that our goal is absolutely a full-blown matriarchy. First we gain the presidency, then we start oppressing the men.
We start passing laws on what elective medical procedures they can have to erode their bodily autonomy, pay them less so they’re more dependent on us, only test medication on women so it’s …
Okay, she wants to be an anonymous whistleblower—I can respect that. I really can. Creating a culture that respects the idea of an anonymous whistleblower necessarily means dealing with kooks and crackpots from time to time (maybe even often). But if she wants her silly claims to have any actionable weight, she’s…
What we learned is that many White people lied. We have learned that many Americans, our neighbors, our cousins, our friends, so called “allies”, “suburban moms”, “moderates”, “independents” are lying cowards who lie to gullible pollsters. The dishonesty and the cowardice is very much on brand for those that don’t have…
For whatever its worth I really agree with the AV club’s article on Seduced and The Vow. I got the sense that Mark withheld material that would make him look bad and a recent interview with the creators suggests a closeness that prevented objectivity. In comparison Seduced follows India’s experience as a narrative…
If you can watch the one on Starz, check it out. I’ve found it to be a much better documentary. India sounds very rehearsed in some comments but they have a lot of cult experts sharing their opinion and explaining the process of brain washing people which was interesting for me. Also, you can see in the Starz…
Let’s make that then kill off the Black female lead in the second season when she asks for equal pay.
Despite how obvious this pairing is, i kinda don’t think this is the right pairing of goth elements? Burton at his best is too melancholy for the Addams’ gleeful, loving transgressiveness, and at his worst is just a guy who likes spiky spirals. I think Jhonen Vasquez would be a way better fit for the property.
Idris Elba
Octavia Spencer
Chris Rock
Lupita N’yongo
and
Morgan Freeman as ‘Thing’
The Addams Family
Coming this Christmas from Tim Burton

I wonder if she’s actually, you know, a queen. Thinking of Isis from the TOS episode Assignment: Earth.
when Book says “she’s a queen!” to the dude pointing a blaster at him, it just makes me very excited for this season. very ready for a star trek character with a heart of gold and a rough exterior who will start fights and stare down death over a cat. move over data.
I’m sure you’ve watched the episode by now and drawn your own conclusions, but here’s my take: I was with you right up until the last five minutes. “Ugh! Another Trek show that feels the need to destroy the Federation and its ideals to manufacture drama!” But the part at the end with Sahil is what gives ME hope.
Well, like you said, you need to actually judge it. What you have is something well written but completely meaningless without actual experience.
You mean, a show born in the optimism of the 60s at the end of the space race spoke to a different audience than they’re speaking to 50 years later? Yes, we changed, this is the reflection. Lazy unearned utopias aren’t sustainable. We’re far more cynical than we were.
Thank you for you willingness to discuss this, too often with new Trek there is a bunch of rabble, rabble it sucks without actually explaining their position. It often just cover for an unwillingness to accept diversity or unrealistic expectation based upon looking at what came before with rose-tinted glasses. So…
Spoiler alert -
Well, having just finished watching this episode, I’m majorly reinvested.
I think that it’s perfectly in tune with the difference in American society when TOS was created (in which we were still riding the wave of post-WWII prosperity) and where we are now. The show is a product of the world that its creators live in, and to do otherwise is to basically indulge in nostalgia. Although, as…
I love her. She and India, and maybe Bonnie - are the only people who have my empathy in the entire documentary. Catherine is a badass, and gorgeous to boot.
Should lead to some fun arguments about whether or not Cleopatra is white. Do your Ptolemaic Dynasty homework now so you’re ready.
