Cinder block, well built. And a modern commercially built barn with an apartment built inside. I’m sure all we’ll get is nasty thunderstorms.

I’m in Naples, west of 41. I feel pretty good so far, plenty of supplies, elevated building, near the hospital. wish me luck
It is true that, in general, Florida has much stronger zoning (where you can build certain types of buildings) and building (how you can build the building) codes than Texas. Wild Texas is actually an academic description of Texas’ code approach - basically a “do what feels good” model for building. Miami-Dade is an…
Good news is maybe it will take out Scientology HQ when it passes over the Tampa area. One can hope....
And back in 2005 Charlie was headed straight up Tampa Bay, and while I stood watching it from my rooftop porch I noticed something was off. And then it obliterated Port Charlotte, Sanibel and Captiva and then Orlando.
On behalf of people on the west coast with elderly parents, and a bunch of other factors. But that do have an entire hurricane cupboard. Sometimes shit happens! And sometimes you aren’t a dickbag interviewed by the news that can’t leave. And sometimes you have lanterns, candles, cases of batteries, water, and food and…
I live in Boca and we evacuated when it looked like the storm was going to rip through my neighborhood. Now, looks like we didn’t need to go at all and I can refocus my anxiety on the west coast.
My aunt and cousins are in Arcadia. They decided not to evacuate because they would have been fine if Irma had stuck to its original path, but now it’s headed right for them.
As a resident of Tampa Bay who is currently hunkering down, I can say that article is extremely accurate.
Charley took a hard right in ‘04 and hit Punta Gorda as a CAT4. You can predict the weather, you just can’t be certain. My family there bugged out this morning after getting surprised by Charley back then. Stay safe, everyone.
Hey, I missed that whole part of your comment about my mom. She’s okay. Been without power for a few days, they’re ok. The house is totally fortified and they’re higher up in elevation so flooding is highly unlikely where she is. Thanks for kind words. ❤️
There’s a shelter about four blocks from me and another one pretty close. I also work across the street from where I live (yeah, sucks) and I can go there, it’s fortified pretty well. I’m in good shape. I’m just worried about the homeless finding shelter and hoping the drunks, crackheads and methheads don’t crawl out…
Well, my understanding is that Florida has pretty stiff building codes, so things might be better there than they were in Texas in terms of general destruction (I do not believe Texas believes in building codes?)
My house is where its projected to make landfall. We left yesterday evening after I put the shutters up and shut down electricity. Although I used sandbags on the doors, I doubt flood waters will reach them given all of the manmade retention ponds and canal systems all round the place, connected to Peace River. I…
Port Charlotte area here. Put up my shutters, sandbagged the doors, headed for farm family in Ocala. We’ll see.
alma mater is on the coast near Sarasota/Bradenton and is about to take a direct hit. hoping for the best
I feel less of a dumbass than android users. Marshmallow? Nougat? Oreo?
For what it’s worth, Apple says it’s pronounced oh-ess-ten. https://support.apple.com/kb/TA22541?locale=en_US
But when a terrorist attack happens, that is the PERFECT time to talk about Trump’s travel ban. Don’t bother waiting to see if the terrorists were from any of the countries on the travel ban list—you go right ahead and promote that travel ban.
I truly cannot imagine being a career EPA employee who now works for this man. Even more so than being a long-time employee in other departments now helmed by twats.
