My guess is that network shows tend to skew slightly older, so maybe that's what they're hoping for.

No, I think the license is just for the parks. It's like Warner Brothers still owns the rights for "Harry Potter" movies, but Universal gets to do the theme park side. I think Nintendo still owns the rights to the characters, so that any studio could make a movie if they could get the license rights from Nintendo.
