I think what you wrote in the first paragraph is what makes it gray/grey and what allows Republicans to make their accusations and for Colbert's supporters to defend him.

No, no one's saying all fellatio is homophobic, and I'm sure you know it. The joke is that Trump, a straight man, is fellating another man. The insult is that Trump is having gay sex, which makes him gay, which makes him weak.

I get that, too. BUT, again, I don't think the Republicans' response is really out of this world because I can totally see liberals doing something equivalent.

Not because it includes a gay sex act, but because it's equating being gay to being subordinate and emasculated. Jon Lovett recently mentioned how he hates Peter Serafinowicz's effeminate Trump gag for what I'm judging to be the same reason.

It would smack of the N-word situation if Colbert had been gay and told the joke. What people don't like is that Colbert gets to tell a homophobic joke that Republicans can't because gays presumably are cool with Colbert and gets a pass. Switch places with Repubs, and I might be complaining about the same thing.

I'm gonna play Lucifer's advocate: from a Trumpster's perspective, the left is calling for treating gays with respect while making homophobic jokes. Discuss.
