For a show that has the decency to never actually show the lead and his love interest (I wish I could call Melissa Fumero a lead but obviously the co-lead here is Andre Braugher) getting sexy times, Boyle being inappropriate is basically the hottest payoff possible for us shippers. I think the beat cop was more a symbol of inspiration, an archetypal hero, than meant to be a specific character. And a very effective symbol he was!

Speaking of, that flashback was awesome. Just really effectively shot, and sweet, and really getting across a big part of Terry's character and backstory in a few seconds. I wanted to give his Cop Superhero a hug and a high five and a raise, instantly :)

Luckily, unlike Facebook they don't slap those icons with a cheerful "Like!" so you don't have to feel awkward about it :)
