Lexus owner (older GenX), can confirm. What I found especially hilarious:
Just one of many ways in which the way we talk about generations in garbage. As if there was some magical cut off on Dec. 30, 1964 which then made kids born then next day have completely different traits.
Somehow I knew the Miata would be on this list. My father traded in his fleet car Dodge Dynasty for a new 2001 NB Miata in Crystal Blue Metallic just before retiring at 55. The article pegged him, from MGB ownership to the lifelong R&T subscription until Peter Egan retired. I have owned the car for the past several…
My 83yo father (actually pre- Boomer) bought the Accord pictured here new in 1985 after decades of buying used GM vehicles, and never bought an American car again. He zips around in a CX-30 now.
For when your Goldwing gets too heavy to manage.
A Miata does not belong on this list. A Toyota Solara convertible on the other hand? Yes.
The correct take. People born just after WWII had a very different environment growing up than the tail end boomers.
These are all over the map. Nissan Rogue? Really? No one actually likes the Nissan Rogue, but everyone likes cheap and easy to park.
I just bought a Toyota Crown, because my wife loves hybrid vehicles, and wanted more tech and luxury than the Camry Hybrid is offering. I priced the Lexus ES300h, and wondered if we should test drive one, as it’s priced similar. Just from online reviews, I decided the Crown is like driving a hearse, and the Lexus is…
My father-in-lw has a 2003 GS300 that I took home one day to wash and polish the paint. A boomer driving by seemed to be impressed enough by it to stop and pay a compliment to the car. In my head I was thinking no it’s just an old high mileage car, but just making it look a little nicer, but instead I just said thanks…
Yep. I bought an IS350 after graduating from college. I was easily 35 years younger than anybody else when I took it for service.
The two car guy Boomers I know (a former colleague, and a friend’s dad) both have NB’s. I’m still in car seat times (even if I’m going grey as an aging Millennial), so Miata’s out, but RX-8 is still on the table (you know, the oversized NC with less reliability).
As the one who suggested it, I almost exclusively see heads of full silver (or thinning) hair popping out the tops of these things.
I have had the opposite experience. On both coasts any actual owners I have met have been 70+, and most have been their first open air vehicle. I do see youngins in tourist areas that have them as rentals, but owners have always been older.
factoryhack’s comments in the slideshow are closest to where I am (born 1960). In elementary school, all I saw in the northern suburbs of NYC were American muscle cars. Enough to be infatuating, but my primary vehicular interests were based on what my father was driving when I was a kid (Volvo 544 to MGB to Jaguar XJ6…
The Lexus one is surprisingly accurate. Every time I take my GX to the dealer for something, I am about 30 years younger than the next youngest person. The parking lot and service department are full of 65-85 year olds driving their RXs around, or LS if they’re wearing a suit.
Good list, I would have never though about the big RV. Good call, nothing like an old guy driving something the size of a building and thinking they can handle it, even if they have never driven something bigger than a Camry.
