Have you been to Panama? Because I went there, and it was terrible. Food is horrible, people are SUPER racist (I was there with my Korean wife and her brother; even without speaking the language, it was hard to miss) and really not much to see or do.

It doesn’t need to involve pain per se, just adversity. So any sport where you have to push yourself, deal with losses, etc. Team sports are also good for developing important social skills. Soccer to make ‘em into reasonably fit athletes, plus golf or tennis so they have a sport they can play when they’re old and/or…
