That could be inferred, yes. The author sure does try their best to infer it. But I think his statement was far less of a slight towards women and much more of a question as to whether or not modern mad has been "softened" by all of our modern day conveniences.

I didn't get that from the article. Except when the author "assumes" that's what he means by "society's cushioning." I took it for what it was. A question as to whether or not all the comforts and conveniences of modern life have taken away the survival skills of our ancestors.
