An average pool can lose 25,000 to 50,000 gallons of water a year due to natural evaporation. This does not consider losses due to splashing, leaks, heated pools etc. Now multiply that to the total number of pools in the entire West and you can now understand the enormity of the problem.

I don’t know where your parents’ pool is, but in coastal California (including LA), it’s very dry and evaporation will take a lot of water out of a pool day-to-day if it doesn’t have a cover.

A bigger issue would be the lavish gardens and lawns that many large homes maintain, which would use immense amounts of water on a regular basis.
