This is a very good point. There are many things about this case that make absolutely no sense. However, if she did commit suicide, it’s STILL on the hands of the police department for their abysmal treatment of Bland during the arrest and negligence that could allow her the time and means to do this.

Wish I could star this 10 times, agree with everything you said.

I have no idea how this comment hasnt gotten more stars. Thank you for a well thought out, and more importantly LOGICAL reply.

I’m a known troll? I don’t know how or why I would be considered a troll. That’s rather disappointing.

From an autopsy perspective, there is no way this was not a suicide and I’m confident the independent autopsy will just further reaffirm this (we may not actually hear the results of that autopsy, however). The police, hospital, prosecutor, prison staff and coroner are not all complicit in covering up a murder here.

Lol at “cunt bitch.” The impotent rage is palpable, but troll isn’t smart enough to think of something clever.

Let's see if flagging this one actually works.

I don’t know if Sandra Bland killed herself or not. But even if she did, that doesn’t mean her arrest wasn’t unjustified, it doesn’t mean the cop that arrested her and abused her physically and verbally wasn’t a racist pig. The cops don’t have to have physically murdered her for this to have been a gross miscarriage

Exactly. They’re still culpable, especially if she told them she was suicidal as documentation suggests. She should have been under surveillance if that was the case, and failing to follow that policy was an instrumental part of her death if she did commit suicide. It’s enough for them to be considered criminally

Even if she did commit suicide, the department is 100% culpable. If she told them she was suicidal (as her booking documentation says, whether she actually said it or not is in question) they should have had her under 24/7 surveillance. That’s policy, and failing to follow that policy is negligent at the very least...

Even if she really did commit suicide, there is still the utter bullshit of her arrest and incarceration. She should never have been in a position to kill herself in jail. So it’s unlikely any autopsy reports will bring “peace".

frankly if she hanged herself- she did so as someone with a history of mental health challenges who’d spent 3 days in jail after an illegal detention by a racist cop who just decided to fuck with her.

as far as i’m concerned thats blood on the police departments hands

You know what is also not unheard of? Blacks being unjustifiably murdered by cops while in custody!

Already here...

I have never seen a group hustle so hard to cover their collective asses as this group in Texas. This stinks to high heaven, and the American “law enforcement is ALWAYS right” is going to go along with every bit of bullshit they are fed because of course a woman stopped for the thinnest of reasons, that ended up dead

Why?

I saw her lawyer and sister on Democracy Now yesterday, and they were learning about everything through the media. They haven’t even got a full autopsy report, just bits and pieces. That alone is ridiculously suspect to me. Top that with police releasing the fact that marijuana was in her system and I smell all kinds

Ugh, yes. Remember that Craigslist killer a couple years ago, who claimed she was in a satanic cult and had murdered a ton of other people, and the cops were like, “Um, no”? It came out that she was molested as a child, and all the reports treated it like “Of COURSE she was molested!” I wrote a piece for xoJane about

I also think the general public works with a pretty superficial definition of “mental illness” and “mentally ill.” My whole life has basically been a case study in the vastness and complexity of that category... One of my older siblings is schizophrenic; he was always the kindest and the least violent of my brothers.

I’m not excusing people saying that (I’ve dealt with mental illness my whole life, and stereotypes like this are part of the stigma against it and a huge problem) but I think it’s in some people’s nature when someone does something horrible to think that they must be mentally ill. I mean, no sane person would do
