I don't think it was shared because he was a man but the fact that he is Indian may have had something to do with it. Still, he has also done amazing, life-saving work and deserves the prize, too.

Some of that is because they don't want the animal to go to an abusive home but also to prevent returns. I volunteer for a couple of shelters and rescue groups and the number of returned animals drops dramatically when adopters are put through the wringer.
