If you use a public laundromat, that isn't too weird.

My son and I have made homemade detergent using Bronner's peppermint bar soap, baking soda (bake it to turn it into washing soda) and Borax. Love it and it costs next to nothing to make. The scent is not too strong or you can use unscented soap.
