Cloud atlas was an Indie film. They couldnt exactly hire a huge amount of actors without going way over budget. Even the actors that they had used were either lovers of the craft that still do broadway shows like Tom hanks, Close friends like Hugo Weaving and Doona Bae, or desperate actresses like Halle Barry :)
