@Phiggurant: I've seen solar-powered Christmas lights. The downside is that they look to be a bit dimmer than the typical variety. I'm not sure of the prices.
Eye strain? I basically live at a computer screen, and never have such issues anymore. I think your eyes just get accustomed to the stresses after a while.

I don't feel like my data is safe with Thunderbird. Things don't do what they are supposed to do, and the status bar never gives me useful feedback.
