Not true. Parisians were immensely kind and helpful to me - offering to help with my luggage (Paris is made of stairs!) and going out of their way to help when I couldn’t find my way about the Louvre. I know Parisians have a bad rep, but I found them nothing but lovely.

I was wearing my ‘Australia’ T-shirt in New Zealand when I offered to buy a drink for a woman at an event when the credit card machine wasn’t working, as I had cash.

She squinted her eyes at me and said, ‘You’re not Australian. An Aussie wouldn’t do that. You’re American! They’re so generous!’

I learned the ‘beer trap’ trick one boring Sunday in Wales while watching a British gardening show. I’ve since passed it along to others, who swear it works.

Even though I was raised in a fundamentalist church, I do find the US’s relationship to alcohol to be pretty weird. I first ran into canned ‘whiskey and Coke’ in Australia 15 years ago and wondered why we can’t get that here.
