I interviewed Mel Brooks about it once (can't say that without it being a #notsohumblebrag, but it was the highlight of my 10 years as a journalist). I asked him very specifically about making it into a musical. He said he could never get away with it. It's too blue. And it's a shame. Because it would be brilliant.
