I recall it didn’t blow, but it wasn’t in the best shape. Going into the pits he didn’t slow down early enough and other issues contributed to him going into the run off (which was sand) that did derail his championship contention. If not for China Lewis would have been a two time champ going into contract negations…

Yea it’s a really interesting time. Darrell Waltrip went after the NASCAR President in an interview that was supposed to be a puff piece in NASCAR’s mind. Which helped gain clout for introducing HANS.

What always struck me was Dale Sr’s death probably would have been written off as a reason for mandatory HANS if it wasn’t for the fact that I think 9 other drivers died within a year including a Petty.

I think he will win at least another one (probably next year), and that will help the argument. I think the record that goes and I hope stays is the win every season of his career, and he had a couple shit cars. Also the fact that he has only ever lost to two teammates in a season both of who were World Champions.
