Before the Atlantic trade, slavery was much more like indentured servitude than the brutal practice it became. In many cases it was also temporary. The commercialization of slavery resulting from the Atlantic trade put money before human dignity, and thus slavery as we know it today was born.

Right, but she was making an ironic statement, I think anyway, about the general problem of whites calling blacks a “problem population.” She took that ugly statement and turned it around against whites. I think you’re choosing not to see that irony there.

Um...white people ARE responsible for slavery. At least in terms of this country’s history.

While slavery has indeed been around for centuries, i do think that the point can be made that Europe took slavery, expanded it to encompass most of the known world, and monetized the crap out of it

Slavery in America is totally because of White people. Slavery in Europe is because of white people.

It’s not that people can’t be individual bigots against rich white protestant men, but it can’t be addressed on a large scale because it has no large scale effects.

As a Boston University alumna (law), this is about what I would expect from the administration. You want to know what this is about? Money. He’s speaking out because rich white alums made enough noise that he was eager to smooth their white, downy feathers. It has nothing to do with soul-searching or anything

I feel like everyone should give her a break. Her job is to explain racism to rich white kids all day. And I feel like if that was my profession, in one of the whitest towns ever. I would utter the words, Fuck these white kids for real, at least five times a day.

My only issue with her statements were that some of them were not factual. She's a professor, she should do her research.

Complacency only happens if you let it. I’m going out Raging Granny style.

I’m reminded of the very first episode of Mad Men when the secretaries were all trying out lipsticks for a company’s market testing. All the men watched Peggy sit and wait because she didn’t pick out a lipstick. One of the characters said (may be paraphrasing, this was a while ago), watching the wheels turn in her

Um...white people ARE responsible for slavery. At least in terms of this country’s history. Right wingers should really crack open a textbook. Apparently so should Brown.

As a white male who went to college I absolutely agree that white masculinity is a huge problem in colleges and everywhere.

Translation of what he said:

He opted to make it so long and tedious that nobody would read the whole thing. That’s a novel communications strategy, for an academic.

Yeah, while I don’t love the idea of quotas, I think it’s a good starting point as things just don’t seem to get better. And if that means a few shitty female directors get hired, well then there are plenty of shitty male directors who are making movies too.

That is the reason I support quotas. I know people hate quotas but I still think just having that role model can help a ton.

This will be interesting for sure! Misogyny is so deeply rooted that I’m not sure how much the government can do to change it. But even there’s a marginal improvement in the ratio, that might help chip away at views like “women can’t direct action” and BS like that.
