Spoke to a friend who is with DC Metro PD and has partnered with Capitol Police on “hundreds of protests”. Here was his take:

Law enforcement sources told the New York Times that the officer was struck with a fire extinguisher during the riot.

This was a coordinated event by the administration in conjunction with Capitol police.  There is already plenty of evidence to support this perspective, and I assume it’s only going to become more damning in the days and weeks to come.
