As hilarious it was to see Forrest eat 15 pancakes, him ruining his life for the show with the divorce and then pulling himself out of the funk by willing himself to eat 30 pancakes to show how we as humans have this ability to try and make our lives better out of shitty experiences is fucking beautiful.
I would rewatch the series if I was you if you really thought there was no build up, especially since by the end of season 3 they were very close friends and that Asami was the only person Korra actually wrote to and told everything to during the 2-3 year gap between season 3 and 4.
