I've only ever seen the first film, and while I didn't care too much for it. It clearly is a product of its time. Bronson gunning down nameless thugs again and again constitutes most of the film, and I can definitely believe that audiences in the 70s were cheering him on as he does it.
That, and it's highly doubtful that we'll even see that full 3hr cut of AoU.
I never took that ending to mean that he was going to "retire." Honestly, I don't think anyone did. Which is why it's weird that all of a sudden, the ending to Iron Man 3 is "muddled."
