LOL That's hilarious! I think Californian accents are just an amalgam of every annoying quirk of the rest of America's accents, wrapped up in vocal fry. It just sounds so grating and uneducated to my ear!

Um, I think you've just been brainwashed by most of the entertainment being filmed in California. Newscasters are taught to have a General American accent, which morphed from the mid-Atlantic East coast accent. Westerners are more clipped like Canadians, and have gobs of vocal fry.
