I agree with you on the tone shift.  It went from somewhat reality-based to full-blown cartoon.  I like it because while the characters are definitely more manic than before, there's a voice behind them.  I can't put my finger on it but it's sort of like how animators and cartoonists tend to put similar behaviors…
