Nah. Fuck you.
Oh, I’m sure his teacher gave an in-depth analysis of Columbus! Including the fact that nobody is exactly sure where his ships landed before he summarily decided a land that had already had a thriving indigenous population was his to “claim.”
My wife teaches world cultures. In middle school. In Texas. Yes, schools are catered to parents who think they know better than teachers. Students have an... odd kind of power over their teachers. This is all true.
Given the teacher’s response, I doubt this teacher is in the right.
there is no down vote option on here so I just wanted to write how much I dislike this comment
As a history teacher in high school, I think this kid’s letter is the visual representation of awesome. At nine he is coherent, asking legitimate questions and pointing out problems. The real problem is the teacher’s dismissive comment that didn’t actually say anything. The teacher is disappointed? Maybe they should…
King is a child. The teacher is an adult. He did in fact pose a challenge to this educator. Some teachers are bureaucrats. Some truly are talented artists who inspire. You can either accept a challenge as an opportunity or a disappointment.
You’re taking a lot of liberties in assessing what did and did not happen in this situation. I wonder if she actually did say this and not the perhaps bullshit that you assume she probably said. In my experience, teachers will often treat young students as if they are completely clueless to anything that their lesson…
That is still what is being taught in my nieces’ schools. I also see textbooks posted regularly with the same ish.
Exactly, and this is why I don’t rock with that “People of Color” bullshit. When shit hits the fan for Black people these others are silent; they protest to have the same rights to kill Black people with impunity as Whites do. MIA has been eating off the African American Hip Hop culture but she not here for the people…
Even out of context, though, the “pop stars should be pretty” hit on Gaga is pretty telling.
people hate being interrupted and inconvenienced. I mean, they may also hate black people, but PETA and Greenpeace and ACT UP all got treated terribly as well. It’s the life of an activist. If a candidate for President embraces you, you’re probably doing something that doesn’t need doing.
I feel like MIA’s statement is just a subset of #alllivesmatter. At this point there are plenty of sources/statements out there about the movement that she could use to educate herself on why it’s called BLM and what they’re fighting for.
Recently I was at a hotel and the bartender was from Sri Lanka. I asked him his opinion of MIA and her politics since she’s from Sri Lanka and has made it big here with her politically charged music. He said that he and many other people in Sri Lanka dislike her, and that the Tamil Tigers, an organization her father…
Yeah, I think in America, people tend to think of “racial issues” as concerning white people’s racism against black people. And because that’s the kind of racism that tends to get thought about and talked about most (even though it’s still not talked about nearly enough), I think that probably causes some misplaced…
We just get lip service in the hope that we will pipe down and go away. Nobody really wants to discuss the plight of blacks in this country because that would mean a lot of our “allies” would have to confront their privilege that think thing they don’t have.
I would like for people, esp. other people of color, to stop acting as if black people are in this privileged position where everybody takes our concerns more seriously than they take the concerns of other marginalized groups.
