It's meant to simulate the same visual experience as a real store. We look at items this way because of habit and learned experiences in real supermarkets. If you were really about efficiency you might was well just make miniatures of everything... would defeat the purpose though.

There's Cloud Computing, Cloud Storage, Cloud Hosting.. it ain't just hard drives...

That's a really good question. I think it's the PowerVR video processor being built right into the A5 chip. I think they work great together. That is something that no one else can do because Apple owns the chips...
