I actually had the opposite reaction, I thought they were playing Lyra as having this innate confidence, being committed to doing something even if its impulsive. I really liked the way that came across, less annoying.

I really enjoyed it as well. I liked the slow build up, it got to show off all these parts of the world so you know that they are there. Considering it has already been renewed for a second season and some of the characters are heading away from the city, that gives it more space to explore the world.
Damn, why can’t I be Canadian? Actually, after all the recent news, the idea of getting to watch Death Comes to Pemberley on netflix is one of the top reasons to move to Canada.
Wait there is a show “Death comes to Pemerberly”?!?! I thought it was just a book!
Same here, I grew up not far from a major ski resort and its pretty common knowledge he’s an absolute dick. Plus the story about what happened between him and Kevin Pearce once Pearce actually started to beat him is pretty telling. He is not a nice guy and the sexual harassment stuff does not surprise me in the least.
If anyone else is interested in another media outlet that has covered to so, so well, check out Katie Strang at The Athletic. It is seriously some of the best writing I have read in a long time.
There is a really great organization called Casting For Recovery that hosts fly-fishing retreats for women battling cancer. It combines learning to fly-fish with support I think. It started just over 20 years ago and grew pretty fast into a great organization. https://castingforrecovery.org/
Between the Penguins decision to visit the White House, David Backes comments about #TakeAKnee and Joel Ward and now this, I am not really loving the NHL and the very privileged attitude that pervades it right now. It’s really making me not want to watch, which is crazy ‘cause as my screen name suggests, I am a huge…
That book is sooo good! One of the best history books I have ever read (and I have a history degree). A really eye-opening look into another time period that sadly reflects our own and I was fascinated with how journalists and investigative journalism, in particular, played such an important role.
Tim Duncan, of San Antonio Spurs fame, is from the US Virgin Islands and he is running a fundraiser specifically for the island and its people. He is widely considered one of the best people in sports, so you know he will follow through. Here is the fundraising page: https://www.youcaring.com/21usvirginislandrelieffund…
That is almost too much a coincidence to be a coincidence, why do I have a feeling that there will end up being a connection there?
Yeah, though instead of a class angle, it could be more a “big kid on campus who gets whatever he wants” angle, which breaks down into almost the same thing. Thetford and the surrounding towns are very small, so there is definitely a “big fish, small pond, small-town hero” angle here, for sure.
Thetford is actually an interesting case, it’s actually an “independent” school. In Vermont, there are not a ton of public high schools, so some towns will play the tuition for local students to go to the private school in the area. I believe this is the case for Thetford. Not saying that this kid isn’t an entitled,…
Sarah MacLean, so much Sarah MacLean!
I unabashedly love this show, it was the only cooking show that I was legitimately sad to see there was only one season. I want more!
I don’t always love our governor in my home state of Vermont, but he has come out pro-refugee on this issue. It’s the only thing stopping from just giving on this country today, between the stupid “lets kill innocent civilians” and “religion tests for refugee status” crap.
For those interested, Christine Brennan also wrote about this topic for USA Today and it’s very similar to what Nolan had to say.
This is awesome! I just finished my first 5K last week and I can safely say I did at least half of these things, multiple times. But I now get to say that I am runner, it was the greatest feeling crossing that finish line and I only did a fricking 5K.
Bernie Sanders has already won this debate.
There was very much a “don’t care, it’s only the third place game” feeling coming out of Germany in that game. They came to win the whole thing, so they really weren’t there for that game.
