And yet you can't blame the director too much for Battlefield Earth…garbage in garbage out. Battlefield Earth is one of the worst books I've ever read.

Its possible to pull a story or two out of The Silmarillion but I don't think you could film the whole thing - it covers too much time, too many different characters and different stories.
