I am not willing to let Gibbons off the hook. There is some truth in it, but the whole lefty-lefty thing doesn’t apply across all pitchers, batters, and situations. Managers who know nothing else and are incapable of thinking on their feet tend to religiously follow such cliches because that’s all they can do.
I understand wanting to maintain the lefty-lefty matchup, but at some point, you realize it’s the third time through the lineup, Price has given up three straight hits, and it’s been a long and arduous half-inning. You gotta pull him before he has a chance to give up a bases-clearing double!
I get that but with Price’s post season history I think he has to come out no matter who comes out of the pen.
