What’s wrong with it?
What’s wrong with it?
And was responsible for one of the most iconic samples ever...
Yeah, I listened to the bits in question. It’s Maher talking over Julian, trying to push his belief system on him (married people are putting on a show, there’s a certain “personality type” that likes to be single, putting him in the same camp as Oprah and the Pope, I guess?) and not letting Julian try to express that…
absolutely, far and away, one of the weirdest things i’ve ever heard.
Maher has always been a boring libertarian.
Yeah, like “don’t let people know that you’re enjoying your life” is weird as hell.
What the fuck? “Don’t talk about how much you love your wife in case your ex hears” is certainly a take, I guess, especially from a man who has never married. Strong incel energy to be honest.
Bill Maher is a dick. He was never a liberal. Seeing how he just barely got scared off from being a scab is more evidence of his unprogressive ways. A real progressive never would have even floated the idea of crossing a picket line. He just seems good at pissing everyone off.
I still dont care. He can make up whatever bullshit story he wants for whatever reason. Whether he is a comic or “clapter comic” whatever that is. His entire audience and the public large already agree that its fine, no one is bothered by it. Lie, embellish, whatever, so long as he entertains.
The doxxing is the only…
He didn't exactly go to great lengths to conceal her identity either. If you're going to exaggerate or embellish for a joke, at least make the other person unidentifiable.
And that was my point about David and Tiffany Sedaris. Tiffany was very open and how much she hated David for talking about her and mocking her and embellishing stories about her mental illness, but he still did it. Even after her death, he did it again in his New Yorker essay about her suicide to the point her…
The issue here is more the very specific story he told about his daughter - one where the outright fabrication about something kind of big is a weird lie to have made up.
I think your second paragraph is the real problem. I don’t care if he embellishes stories in his comedy, or even if he just straight up lies to help a bit. If the stories are presented as true-ish and implicate real people, I think there’s a different standard. It does seem a little weird that this is coming to a head…
He’s also from Florida and he went to a fancy private school. He doesn't sound like that either.
I’m not a fan of Minhaj, but this is a stupid controversy. Comedians embellish & make shit up. That’s part of the job. The goal isn’t to tell the truth, it’s to make you laugh.
The issue doesn’t seem to be so much that he embellished but that he lied about real people and used their photographs, leading to their doxxing.
The premise is stupid. All comedians embellish for effect.
I’ll have to read the New Yorker piece first, but did everyone really think each joke a comedian tells is akin to testimony in a court of law?
Wrapped Around Your Finger for sure. Obviously Every Breath was their biggest hit but I don’t remember much about the video, while Wrapped has indelible imagery.
