Inviting people out for dinner, choosing the menu, and expecting them to compensate you for it would be kinda weird. But traditions are just What We’ve Always Done, they aren’t based on an analysis of best practices or anything. 

Most people have difficulty communicating or recognizing that their experiences are not universal, or even common. There is no good reason to extrapolate your personal experiences to the other 400 million people on this continent. You can try, and sometimes you’ll be right, but it’s not reliable.

Since this information is unfortunately in my head, I feel compelled to soil your brain with it too.

If the MiL has already been confronted, the only solution is enforcing boundaries. When she’s inappropriate, say “That’s not appropriate.” When she’s rude, say so. Interact with her like you would any other adult. Tell her what you won’t tolerate, then don’t tolerate it.

I suppose my issue isn’t so much with how you’ve defined shittiness, but in the way you’ve created a false dichotomy: by your thinking, there’s true monsters and then there’s shitty people. I obviously don’t have much to say about being a tall girl in high school (not a girl), but being a tall dude wasn’t great in high school, and I’m sure the tall girls had it worse. Adolescents are mostly desperate to fit in, which draws them to the norm, not the unicorn.

This is just differing definitions of shittiness. I’d say your uncle is a crank, and in my opinion being a dismissive crank isn’t shitty; unlikeable and probably somewhat disrespectful, sure, but on the whole probably still not a bad person.

Having read the SI piece, I feel reasonably comfortable saying Brown isn’t some kind of monster, he’s just shitty. He doesn’t like people, he doesn’t trust anyone, he uses and screws people over and rationalizes it by saying that he’s been used and screwed over. He’s a shitty dude. And he seems unwell.
