I agree that her academic concentration isn’t cultural appropriation. But a white woman with traditionally African American hair styles (assuming she isn’t actually holding herself out to be black)? I’ve seen a lot of internet hate for white women with cornrows. I don’t understand how this is any different.
Serious question—Could a white woman be taken seriously as an African Studies professor? If she did everything the same, except be fully open about being white, would that lecture on hair be well received? How would it also not be perceived as cultural appropriation?

My senior year the new dress code rule was that all shirts had to be tucked in. Several people were targeted more than others for this particular rule violation. At graduation, they tucked their gowns in before going up to get their diplomas. It’s been more than ten years and I still think it’s fucking hilarious.
