While true, banning the public account and not the account used on the device doing the modding is what I find strange. Some of the users in that thread mentioned that they use separate accounts and hardware for modding so that they never “risk” their personal accounts.

The first person they mentioned had his personal Switch (not the one they did hacking on) banned from online access though. And, if we take them for their word, this device had never been modified in any way. So it’s one step removed from the expected punishment. It would be like if you had two 360s and they banned…

I think people are trying the “Tell the public he’s awesome and hope he sees it on TV before he makes up his mind” approach. Then, feel free to be honest at a later date when people remember you met 45.

There are a lot of ways different people buy it, but it’s not all conscious. People can be controlled via fear very effectively. Fear of being outcast by your community (read: Church). Fear of public shame for accepting help (read: handouts) or loving someone that others don’t accept (read: gay, black, foreign).
