What an odd metric. Kotaku never called Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild or Elden Ring “fun” in their reviews either at a glance.
Not to get too in the weeds here but I think “it should be fun” is an extremely limiting and weird way of processing art, games included. It’s very obvious from the review that Ari enjoyed the game, whether or not the word “fun” popped into his brain at any point.
Well also reviewers have also probably used up their lifetime number of the word “fun” in a review they will want to start using synonyms instead.
Wait are you saying a game probably isn’t enjoyable unless the reviewer specifically uses the word “fun” in the review? Because that’s a really bizarre way to navigate the world.
I was so looking forward to this game, but I don’t think I can bring myself to play it right now. We said goodbye to our cat on Friday night. Lymphoma was very aggressive and we didn’t want her to suffer anymore. I was so looking forward to playing this with her in my lap.
I mean, Kojima admitted that he wanted her to be designed to be sexualized, so we should keep that in mind when asking questions like “why is she posing with her ass in my face on the helicopter” but it’s when he then tries to say “Oh, but there’s an important narrative reason why she’s like this” that it becomes…
Yeh, my understanding is that slut-shaming is like... calling a woman a slut / saying she has less “value” because she chooses to flaunt / use her sexuality in a way that someone finds objectionable. I don’t think it’s “slut-shaming” Quiet to say that the disembodied camera bouncing between her taint and her boobs is…
While sloppily handled I thought she was a commentary on sex object characters. These characters exist all throughout anime or comic-based media and nobody bats an eye. Does Black Widow have a personality in Avengers? Does her falling in love with Hulk or being said about being unable to have children count as…
I have always taken issue with the discourse around Quiet which always just sounded to me like slut-shaming.
Oh. I didn’t realize Kojima gave up on the whole “You’re gonna be ashamed when you find out why!” nonsense and straight up said she was designed for sexy cosplay and toys. Well, uh, at least he was finally honest?
Quiet’s constant objectification throughout MGSV, not to mention the convenient plot-based excuse they keep her nearly silent was almost off-putting enough for me to quit the game. I’m not online enough to know how much outrage it generated but it certainly offended me. I think the breaking point where I nearly…
I’ve never had a ton of interest in getting a tattoo but I have been telling myself for the last 10 or 15 years that I want to get a Triforce somewhere. Of course, I’m now almost 40 and pretty sure it’s just not gonna happen BUT my sister-in-law was showing me a newish tattoo recently and it rekindled the thought in…
Kudos to the organizers to have the balls to let their creators describe their thoughts without muzzeling them on behalf of their sponsors.
The difference is when you lose access to your physical games it’s typically because you lost them, not because a faceless corporation decided to on a whim. While there are other factors like hardware obsolescence that add challenges, particularly in PC, it’s not debatable that a physical media copy that you own gives…
If you remove the shitty crypto stuff, isn’t that kind of just... exactly what Early Access is?
In my lifetime I’ve still lost access to more physical games than I have digital ones.
Are people still paying attention to this guy? Did everyone just ignore when he broke the law by filming inside a bathroom at E3?
Oh well..
This kind of stuff is, as you note of course, entirely predictable and it seems frankly not enough consumers care. As a physical media embracing old person, I realized I lost the battle when my physical copy of the rebooted X-COM required me to download Steam and the game itself. I am not a proponent of piracy in an…
One thing I love about the “reddit is fun” app is that I wasn’t even aware that avatars existed until I saw some posts/memes about them. And I still don’t ever have to see them.
