From what I know, (according to Jesus Christ Superstar-the nuns told me it was pretty accurate) Jesus is really moody and mopey at times. If Jesus can't be happy all the time, how can his followers expect that of themselves?

There’s literally no interpretation of the gospels that encourages the false appearance of joy. Shit, Jesus was pretty emo himself. He’d like, be in a mood and go off on his own to yell at God.

I know a family like that, I think it’s child abuse. I visited one time and it felt like being in a horror movie with weird changelling parents and the children smiling because they are too afraid to cry.

Yes! This is a fundamentalist thing, I believe. I remember reading that the Duggars believe this, which is why it makes perfect sense that the sisters all graciously and cheerfully “forgive” their brother for molesting them. If they were unhappy about it, they’d go to hell.

I don’t know about this guy in particular, but he seems to fit with the school of thought espoused by some prominent conservative Christians that it is a sin not t appear joyful when doing your duty. So, it’s a sin for a woman’s face to honestly reflect her feelings of not being in the mood, but it’s not a sin to lie and act enthusiastic when she’s not?
